UN Ocean Conference 2025
THE UN OCEAN CONFERENCE 2025 (UNOC3)
The third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), co-chaired by the governments of France and Costa Rica, is set to take place in Nice from 9-13 June 2025. With the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” UNOC3 builds upon the previous UN Ocean Conferences held in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022). This pivotal gathering offers a multilateral platform for governments, civil society, and all ocean stakeholders to unite in addressing the urgent issues facing our ocean, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) to conserve and sustainably use marine resources.

The ocean is fundamental to life on our planet and our future. The ocean is a vital source of the planet’s biodiversity. Therefore, clarification on the risks posed by pollution in our country Sri Lanka, one of the developing countries with oceans, seas, ponds and lakes, and in other countries of our organization’s national branches, support and implement SDG 14.1,2, SDG6.3, 6.6, SDG13.3, SDG15.5″
In Sri Lanka, seas, ponds and rivers or lakes face pollution from various sources. These include sewage discharge, agricultural waste discharge, industrial waste discharge, poor waste management, algae blooms, and household waste products, which lead to pollution problems. Currently, maritime law enforcement agencies are doing very little to address marine pollution crimes. The display of pollution awareness posters and the implementation of provincial, municipal, divisional and criminal justice measures can effectively reduce marine pollution crimes. This also helps to improve the safety of the waterways to reduce the risk of marine loss of life.
Pollution can be prevented and protected by improving measures to prevent dumping of pollutants, dumping of solid waste, and discharging household waste into drains in areas such as the ocean, beaches, ponds, and lakes, as well as by monitoring and educating people about the adverse effects of pollution.
The implementation of the actions highlighted in the declarations of SDG 14, titled “Our Ocean, Our Future, Our Responsibility” and “Accelerating Action and Mobilizing All Actors to conserve and Sustainable Use the Oceans.” can help protect and sustainably use oceans, lakes, and water resources. Therefore, our organization fully supports SDG 14 and pledges to contribute to the reduction of pollution of water resources such as beaches, lakes and ponds in order to fulfill its declarations and actions. For this purpose, we will successfully and continuously implement marine protection and ponds and lakes protection by joining international organizations, private organizations, and financial institutions in partnerships.
UNIPUN will also access the support of the United Nations, bringing together local communities and research to assess the challenges and opportunities in implementing SDG 14.
